Astros Release Another Reliever From 40-Man Roster

August 14, 2024 by Last Word On Baseball

The Houston Astros have released right-handed reliever Dylan Coleman after designating him for assignment last week. Coleman was acquired from the Kansas City Royals in December and pitched one scoreless inning for the Astros on April 3. He has spent the majority of the season with Triple-A Sugar Land yielding a 6.50 ERA over 36 frames. Coleman has struggled over his past 5 2/3 innings, allowing 12 runs (11 earned) on eight hits and walking nine. His recent slide ultimately led to him being designated for assignment to clear a 40-man roster spot for Zach Dezenzo.

Drafted by the Padres in 2018, Coleman was traded to the Royals following the shortened COVID-19 pandemic season in 2020. After posting a 3.28 ERA over 57 2/3 innings in the minors, Coleman made his MLB debut in 2021. In his debut season with Kansas City, he made five relief appearances, recording a 1.42 ERA. The soon-to-be 28-year-old right-hander had a breakout season in 2022 tossing 68 innings of relief with a 2.78 ERA. Coleman looked well on his way to establishing himself as a big-league reliever going into the 2023 season. But that success deteriorated quickly.

Coleman struggled to an 8.84 ERA and walked 19 batters in 23 appearances before being optioned to Triple-A Omaha. His command troubles continued in Omaha where he walked 21.8 percent of his opponents and recorded a 4.70 ERA. Coleman was traded to Houston in December, but his command struggles continued, and his fastball velocity plummeted with Sugar Land. Ultimately, Houston didn’t see Coleman making his way back to the majors with the Astros and released the 27-year-old righty.

Coleman, now a free agent, will likely find another opportunity elsewhere – albeit on a minor league deal. His prior track record while in Kansas City and his remaining club control should be enough to spark interest from teams seeking bullpen depth. Whether that’s in the coming days, weeks or in the offseason.
