Astros bring back the first baseman after a brief stint in Mets system
After releasing him following the 2024 season, the Houston Astros reunite with first baseman Jon Singleton, signing him to a minor league deal according to Chandler Rome of The Athletic.
This marks his third stint with the organization, playing for the Astros from 2014-2015 and again from 2023-2024.
After being released by the Astros following the 2024 season and signing a minor-league deal with the New York Mets, Singleton spent the beginning of the 2025 season playing for the Mets Triple-A team, the Syracuse Mets.
In his 55 games this season, he showed that, despite being 33-years-old, he still has the pop in his bat with an OPS over .800. Batting just .213, he made up for it with seven doubles and 12 homers, picking up 42 RBI and striking out just 60 times and walking 39 time.
Primarily a first baseman, Singleton was brought on by the organization likely due to the need of another left-handed bat. With Yordan still on the IL, the Astros currently have four guys who can hit from the left side, with two being lefties and two being switch hitters.
Of those four, only one bat has been able to produce consistently for the team this season so far, that being Victor Caratini. As for the other three (César Salazar, Luis Guillorme and Cooper Hummel), all of them have either not produced enough at the big league level or they have not has the chance to.
Christian Walker in the primary first baseman for the Astros, and he will be for the next three years, but, if Singleton can prove himself in the minors, there is a chance we could see him taking some of those reps away as a left-handed option for Espada.
