Astros Yordan Alvarez Shut Down After Hopes of Weekend Return

June 1, 2025 by Last Word On Baseball

After the Houston Astros placed outfielder Chas McCormick on the injured list, Astros fans were given another bit of bad news. This time, it pertains to the Yordan Alvarez injury. Chandler Rome of The Athletic reports that Alvarez dealt with discomfort in his right hand on Friday and was sent for imaging. Unfortunately, general manager Dana Brown said that the imaging revealed Alvarez has a fracture in his right hand that is 60 percent healed. As a result, he has been shut down from baseball activities for the time being.

Yordan Alvarez felt discomfort after his live BP yesterday and the Astros sent him for imaging. General manager Dana Brown said it showed a fracture that is “60 percent healed.” Alvarez will be shut down, but Brown hopes he can return “in the near future.”

A Longer Road for the Yordan Alvarez Injury

Alvarez was due back from his injury on May 13th. This date represented the minimum amount of time allowed on the IL. That date came and went. It was clear that the Astros wanted to ensure their star slugger was fully ready to go.

Before landing on the IL, the 28-year-old DH was mired in a season-long slump. All told, he’s hitting .210 with a .646 OPS and only three home runs across 121 plate appearances. It was a far cry from the production that landed Alvarez a lucrative extension with the Astros.

Alvarez was finishing up his rehab and slated to return to the Astros as early as this weekend. On Friday, he took live batting practice off a couple of minor league arms. Manager Joe Espada had glowing reviews of the progress, and went on to say “I think we’re going to give this some time here and see how this feels, I think today went well.”

It turns out it wasn’t meant to be for Alvarez and the Astros.

The Astros have held their own without Alvarez. They took over the top slot in the AL West from the Seattle Mariners and hope to continue their success. However, even with the success, this lineup needs his production. Now, there isn’t a clear timetable for his return. However, the hope is that they can hold onto a postseason spot until he’s back.
