Nolan Arenado Sweepstakes Revived By The Astros

February 23, 2025 by Last Word On Baseball

According to multiple sources, the Houston Astros have revived trade discussions with third baseman Nolan Arenado. Arenado may be willing to relinquish his no-trade clause for the Astros claimed by established sports writers John Denton, Mark Feinsand, and Brian McTaggart. Arenado has been on the trade block all offseason, but all the speculation didn’t amount to any trades. The Boston Red Sox were strong pursuers of the 33-year-old but moved on after signing free agent Alex Bregman. The New York Yankees and the Los Angeles Dodgers were also in the mix to land Arenado on several accounts during the offseason. The Yankees are still without a third baseman, and their hopes of acquiring Arenado could soon be gone.

Nolan Arenado Sweepstakes Revived By The Astros

Astros Acquiring Arenado Presents Obstacle

If Arenado were to wave his n0-trade clause for the Astros, it would require them to shake up their lineup. The Astros have already moved nine-time All-Star Jose Altuve to left field. With Christian Walker at first and Issac Paredes at third base, this means that Paredes would likely need to move to second. This would be a gamble for the Astros, as Paredes’ defensive skills aren’t the strongest. But this would be the only way to have them all in the lineup. Last season, Arenado sported a .272 batting average along with 16 home runs, 71 RBIs, and 157 hits.

Arenado had a down season in 2024 offensively, which is partly why finding a new home has been difficult. But Arenado has an impressive baseball resume as an eight-time All-Star, 10-time Gold Glove winner, five-time Silver Slugger winner, and six-time Platinum Glove. He’s demonstrated that he would be a great asset to any organization. With the Astros losing Bregman, Arenado would be a suitable replacement at third, as Arenado would provide the Astros with a solid defensive boost. Additionally, if he can rebound his offense, it would surely help the Astros, who had one of their worst offensive seasons in 2024.
