The last time Houston and Detroit played was in the 2024 Wildcard Round of the postseason, in which the Tigers made short work of the good guys. Detroit won by counts of 3-1 in game one and 5-2 in game two. Yordan Alvarez (.804), Mauricio Dubón (.800) and Alex Bregman (.750) were the only Houston players above Yainer Diaz’ .661 OPS. Framber Valdez lost game one, allowing three runs on seven hits and a pair of walks in 4 1⁄3 innings, and Ryan Pressly blew a save and took the loss in game two.
I don’t know who, but somebody let the Tigers get hot. — AJ Hinch, after Game Two
Overall, Houston has a 50-40 record when playing the Tigers, a .568 regular season winning percentage that ranks as Houston’s fifth-best against another team.
The Tigers are red hot, coming into town with an 8-2 mark through their last 10 games. WWWLWLWWWW for those who care. That blows Houston’s 6-4 mark away — LWWLWWWLLW.
In Detroit’s last series, they swept the Baltimore Orioles in three games at home in Detroit. In the final game, Tarik Skubal (3-2, 2.34) struck out 11 and allowed four hits in six innings. He walked zero and got 61-of-91 pitches over the plate. Javy Báez and Gleyber Torres led Detroit’s offense with a single and a double each, along with five RBI between them.
This is going to be a good offense, and Tarik had to be good today to beat them. I’m sure some of that may come from the at-bats that he had against them in Sarasota, but more of it is about how can Tarik execute 100 perfect reps. And he’s getting pretty close. — Hinch
Detroit’s mark of 18-10 is the best record in the American League, and trails only the New York Mets 19-9 and the San Francisco Giants at 19-10 in all of baseball. Meanwhile, the Astros look to remain above .500 after an up-and-down April (good pitching, hit-or-miss (literally) offense). If the season were to end today, the Tigers would be the number one seed, while Houston would be the top non-qualifier in the AL.
