What happened today in team history?

1962 – St. Louis comes to town

For the first time, the St. Louis Cardinals come to Houston to face off against the Colt .45s and lose 4-3 to Houston. Prior to this, the Cards had a minor league team in Houston, the Houston Buffalo, who played there for over 40 years.

1965 – First real scoreboard use

A home run by Bob Aspromonte sets off the Astrodome scoreboard’s first ever home run display in a 5-0 win against the Pirates.

2022 – Pena comes in clutch

After a four-game losing streak from an early Houston Astros team, rookie shortstop Jeremy Pena helped that come to an end with a two-run bomb in the tenth inning to beat the Toronto Blue Jays 8-7.

What else happened on this day?

1901

The first game in American League history is played between the Chicago White Stockings and Cleveland Blues and ends in a 8-2 win for the White Stockings.

1917

New York Yankees pitcher George Mogridge becomes the first player in their franchises history to throw a no-hitter en route to a 2-0 win over the Chicago Cubs.

1962

MLB Commissioner Ford Frick sends New York Mets player Casey Stengel a $500 fine for appearing in a beer commercial with his uniform on.

1998

Geoff Jenkins of the Milwaukee Brewers hits their first home run in franchise history when he takes a ball from Orel Hershiser over the fence to help the Brewers win 7-5 over the San Francisco Giants.

2008

After the discovery is made of a David Ortiz Red Sox jersey in the cement of the new Yankee Stadium, it gets auctioned off, going to the highest bidder for over $175,000.
