1967 – The ultimate turnaround
After shipping closer Claude Raymond to the Atlanta Braves in exchange for Wade Blasingame just minutes before the end of the deadline, Raymond saves a 9-8 win for the Braves against the Houston Astros.
1972 – Wynn for the win
Not able to get anything across against the eventual Cy Young winner Steve Carlton on the mound for the Philadelphia Phillies, the two teams head to extras tied at zero. That was when Astros slugger Jim Wynn belted a walk-off solo-shot in the 11th for the 1-0 win.
1995 – Back-and-forth
In a 16-inning thriller, the Astros outdueled the New York Mets to win 7-5. This included the Astros going up two separate times in extras, once in the 12th and again in the 15th. It wasn’t till the Astros loaded the bases for Jeff Bagwell that they were able to get and keep the lead.

Andy Strong, a player on the Crowley Millers of the Gulf Coast League, is killed by a lightning strike in the 6th inning after the game was halted for weather in the fifth.

Otis Nixon, a speedster for the Braves, sets an NL record and ties an MLB record by recording six stolen bases in their game against the Montreal Expos.

In a pregame ceremony, the Los Angeles Angels became the first of three teams to retire Nolan Ryan’s number, with the Astros and Texas Rangers doing it eventually in 1996.

MLB and fans around the world mourn the loss of legendary broadcaster Mel Allen, who had hosted “This Week in Baseball” since 1977 and died at the age of 83.

The St. Louis Cardinals reveal that they are being investigated by the FBI in relation to one of their employees allegedly hacking into the Astros’ files and stolen information.
