Today in Astros history – June 18

June 18, 2025 by The Crawfish Boxes

What happened today in team history?

1967 – Don Wilson no-no

A 22-year-old Don Wilson completes his first career no-hitter, striking out Atlanta Braves slugger Hank Aaron to finish a 2-0 win. While it is the third no-hitter in Houston Astros history, it not only is the first no-hitter to end in a shutout, but it is also the first no-hitter thrown in the Astrodome.

1972 – Jerry Reuss’ gem

Astros pitcher Jerry Reuss allowed just one hit, a ninth-inning double, in a 10-0 win over the Philadelphia Phillies. This marked Reuss’ one and only shutout of the year. The Astros got most of their help offensively from Cesar Cedeno, who finished with four hits, two of them doubles and one of them a bomb.

2001 – Bagwell and Berkman do the damage

Lance Berkman and Jeff Bagwell tally four RBI each in a 13-5 domination of the Colorado Rockies. The Rockies did manage to end the game with more hits than the Astros, outhitting them 14-12, but still lost by eight runs.

2015 – Correa steals the show

Newly called-up Astros shortstop Carlos Correa became the second youngest player in MLB history to steal three bags in a game, doing it at 20 years old. The only person to do it younger was Rickie Henerdson, who accomplished this feat for the first time when he was just 18 days younger than Correa.

What else happened on this day?

1909

In an attempt to play baseball at night, Cincinnati Reds president Garry Herrmann installed flood lights around the stadium. After the game was finished, the next night game to be played in the MLB wouldn’t happen for another 25+ years.

1971

The first ever “10 cent beer night” promotion is held by the Milwaukee Brewers. Expected to be a mess, it ended up much better than expected thanks to low attendance due to weather.

1972

Oakland A’s owner Charlie Finley agreed to pay each of his players $300 to grow a mustache for baseball’s first ever “Mustache Day” and all of his players do expect one.

1976

Brewers slugger Hank Aaron became the first, and still just one of two players in history, to hit 750 home runs when he hit his 750th to give the Brewers a 3-2 win over the A’s.

2001

In one of the earliest efforts to speed up game times, the MLB imposed a rule that game relief pitchers just a two-minute limit for warm-up tosses when entering the game in the middle of an inning.

2012

Roger Clemens gets acquitted after a 10-week trial on charges of obstructed justice and lying to Congress when testifying at a 2008 deposition during a nationally televised hearing.
