What happened today in team history?

1969 – Very productive leave

While on a 24-hour leave from the Army, Houston Astros pitcher Private Larry Dierker outlasted Steve Carlton for a 2-1 win over the St Louis Cardinals in 11-innings. Dierker also capped off his night by helping himself out with the game-winning RBI.

1990 – Houston shocks the Red

In a matchup against the Cincinnati Reds, Astros pitch-hitter Glenn Wilson cranked a three-run bomb in the 10th inning to secure a 3-1 win. Both starters threw nine shutout innings of ball before the Reds finally got on the board for the first run of the game with an RBI-single in extras.

2001 – Houston wins in Arlington

After many meetings between the two teams, the Astros won for their first time on the road in Arlington, beating the Texas Rangers 5-4. Astros DH Moises Alou was the hero in this one, delivering a game-winning solo-shot in the 11th for Houston.

What else happened on this day?

1909

Clarence “Cack” Henley of the San Francisco Seals completed the longest complete-game in baseball history, pitching all 24 innings of a 1-0 win over the Oakland Oaks.

1950

The Boston Red Sox established a then-major league record for the most runs in a game during their 29-4 win over the St. Louis Browns. This record stood for over 50 years before eventually being topped in 2020.

1961

As part of their 10-8 loss, the Milwaukee Braves set an MLB record by hitting four home runs in a row in the seventh inning. It all started when Eddie Mathews and Hank Aaron went back-to-back to start the inning.

1968

Following the assassination of New York Senator Robert F. Kennedy just two days prior, MLB suspended games in New York, Washington and San Francisco. The New York Mets asked for their game to be postponed.

2005

New York Yankees third baseman Alex Rodriguez became the fastest player to ever reach 400 home runs after a solo-shot in the eighth against the Milwaukee Brewers gave him the mark.

2015

Draft day for arguably one of the best draft classes of the 2000’s so far. Vanderbilt shortstop Dansby Swanson went first overall and was followed by other stars like Alex Bregman (2nd overall), Brendan Rodgers (3rd) and Kyle Tucker (5th).
