A Change For Marcus Hooker; Transitioning From Buckeye To Penguin

Marcus Hooker

Needed Change

Needed change is a big process.  Transitioning from a Buckeye to a Penguin is rare to see.  However, one of the star players that is already being looked at without any practice or start to the season is former Ohio State safety Marcus Hooker, the brother of first-round pick Malik Hooker. Marcus committed to the Penguins this past month.

Hooker’s Time At Ohio State

Hooker originally went to Ohio State starting at free safety during his redshirt freshman season in 2019.  That season he finished with seven tackles and a pass deflection.  In 2020, Hooker started more games in the shortened season, improving with 15 total tackles and his first collegiate interception.

Unfortunately for Hooker his potential came a little too late. Injuries became a problem along with off the field issues and he didn’t start a single game in 2021 under coach Ryan Day.  Because of this and other issues that happened off the field, he decided to enter the transfer portal which led him to Youngstown State.

How Can This Help YSU?

Last season, Youngstown State’s defense ranked 120th in defense which is fourth to last in the FCS and 67th in passes intercepted.  Looking back at a couple of games, especially the game against Penn State in 2020, there’s potential for Hooker who has great eyesight for the ball.  Consistency, issues off the field, and injuries have been a problem but if this is controlled this season, look for Hooker to have big games and get the defensive back game going strong for the Penguins.

Time will tell.  The players have reported for summer workouts and the season is coming upon us.  Only three more months until opening kickoff against Duquesne.  The team has already finished up their GRIT camp and with some summer practice and weight room training, it’s time for Hooker and the Guins to prepare for this 2022 campaign.
