Make that two wins in Omaha…and counting
Texas A&M staved off elimination for the second time in three days, and keeps their title hopes alive after 5-1 victory over Notre Dame, sending Notre Dame packing. Much of the credit for the win goes to starting pitcher Nathan Dettmer, who after failing to get out of the second inning in Friday’s loss to Oklahoma, pitched seven shutout innings to prolong A&M’s fantastic season.
Offensively, the Aggies took advantage of some Notre Dame miscues in the second, including two walks, a balk, a “hit” that should have been an easy flyout, and a throwing error to score three runs in the top of the third. While this alone would have been enough to secure victory, they added some insurance with a Trevor Werner home run followed by base hits from Jack Moss and Dylan Rock.
Once Dettmer exited the game, Brad Rudis surrendered a home run to Notre Dame’s Brooks Coetzee to open the 8th inning before Jospesh Menefee closed out the final two innings.
With the victory, Aggie baseball has won multiple games in Omaha and reached the “final four” of the College World Series for the first time in program history. It also marks the second time in 18 months that A&M has had a top four finish in one of the three major sports, following football’s No. 4 finish in 2020.
The Aggies get little time to celebrate their win, as they face elimination yet again tomorrow when they get a rematch with the Oklahoma Sooners. Win that game, and they would play Oklahoma AGAIN on Thursday, this time with the winner advancing to the National Championship series beginning Saturday.
