First Glance: Missouri Tigers

September 30, 2024 by Good Bull Hunting

COLLEGE FOOTBALL: OCT 01 Georgia at Missouri

The first of many Tigers

Get to know Mizzou:

  • Location: Columbia, MO
  • Established: 1839

  • Enrollment: 31,041
  • Mascot: Tigers
  • Colors: Old gold and black
  • Conference: SEC

Setting the stage:

  • Texas A&M is 4-1 (2-0 in SEC play) and ranked No. 25 in the AP Top 25 coming off of a gutsy 21-17 win over Arkansas.
  • Mizzou is 4-0 (1-0 in SEC play), ranked No. 9 and coming off a bye week
  • This is the only ranked-vs-ranked matchup in college football this weekend
  • The SEC Nation Pregame Show will be in College Station and air on Saturday morning from Aggie Park.

Betting lines:

  • A&M -1.5
  • O/U: 49.5

Historical notes:

  • Texas A&M leads the all-time series 9-7, but it is tied 2-2 since joining the SEC.
  • Mizzou has not come to College Station since 2014.
  • If Texas A&M wins this game, it will be the first time they’ve gotten to the second weekend in October with just one loss since 2020. If Mizzou wins, it will be the first time they’ve gotten to the second weekend in October undefeated since 2013.
  • Famous Missouri alumni include Jon Hamm, Chris Cooper, Tom Berenger, Sheryl Crow, Walmart founder Sam Walton (I was as surprised as you), sports team purchasing enthusiast Stan Kroenke (Arsenal, LA Rams, Denver Nuggets, Colorado Avalanche, Colorado Rapids), SportsCenter’s John Anderson and a slew of other journalists, and the world’s smartest man, Chase Daniel (who earned more than $41 million in his 14-year NFL career despite starting only five games).

What to watch for:

  • Offensive answers? In their last two games, Mizzou has put up just 27 points against Boston College and 20 points in regulation against Vandy. The Aggies haven’t fared any better, scoring 26 against Bowling Green and 21 against Arkansas. Both teams have struggled despite not being turnover-prone. Which one will prove more effective against what might be the best defenses they’ve each seen so far this season?
  • Signal caller situation: Conner Weigman missed his third straight game with an AC join injury, and while backup QB Marcel Reed has filled in admirably and gone 3-0, it’s been far from a smooth ride for the A&M offense. Will Weigman be able to play on Saturday, or will his return be pushed until after the bye week?
  • Narrative-writing: Despite the Tigers being undefeated and in the top 10, many don’t seem to be viewing them as an SEC contender because they’re still relatively untested this season. That might change with a win on Saturday. Likewise, pretty much everyone wrote off the Aggies after the season-opening loss to Notre Dame, but a win would be their best of the season and allow them to control their own destiny headed into late October in the SEC.

Media blitz:

  • Venue: Kyle Field (College Station, TX)
  • Kickoff: 11 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 5
  • TV: ABC
  • Radio: 1620 AM/94.5 FM, TAMU Sports Network, SiriusXM 190
  • Live stats | Live audio

Weather:

  • Partly cloudy. High 91F. Winds NE at 10 to 15 mph.
