Former Washington running back Cam Davis is entering his seventh season of eligibility, and he’ll do so as a Minnesota Golden Gopher. Injuries have hindered different portions of his career, but his performance in 2022 stands out, particularly to Husky fans. That season, Davis scored 13 touchdowns on over 100 attempts as a part of a running back duo that also featured Wayne Taulapapa. At Big Ten Media Days in Las Vegas, Minnesota head coach PJ Fleck had high praise for his new running back addition. It appears that the former member of Chris Petersen’s 2019 class at Washington has found a great fit in Dinkytown.

“I love Cam,” Fleck said of the former Husky running back. “Cam was actually just voted a captain of our football team.” Davis transferred to Minnesota in the Winter transfer portal window and has quickly made an impact on his new roster. “To come as a ‘transplant’ slash portal transfer,” Fleck began. “And then be voted captain before the season starts, says a lot about Cam. It says a lot about his family, it says a lot about his upbringing, it says a lot about his work ethic.”
“Go ask Darius Taylor about Cam,” Fleck added. Taylor, a true junior, was an All-Big Ten Honorable Mention in 2023 and 2024 and will be the Gophers’ starting running back again this Fall. Fleck continued, “He’ll tell you that [Davis] might be one of the best ones, if not the best one we have. Darius has no problem telling you that.” From the words of Fleck, Davis appears to have made an instant connection in his new locker room. Being voted a team captain so quickly also speaks to the character and leadership skills of the former Husky.
Fleck said that Davis was a little limited this Spring. But from the appearances and rotations Davis did make during practice, Fleck was enthusiastic. “I thought he was fabulous and I look forward to training camp to watch him, because I think he’s going to do a lot of good things for us.” Davis totaled 15 touchdowns in his Washington career. Thirteen of which came during that 2022 season that also featured 522 rushing yards.
