Aggies may soon be in the market for a new basketball coach
Texas A&M’s season ended in disappointing fashion with a second-round defeat at the hands of Michigan, and it looks like Aggie basketball fans may be in store for even more disappointment. Murmurs have swirled for a while that Buzz Williams may leave Aggieland after this season, and that chatter has intensified as Jeff Goodman is officially reporting that Buzz is interested in the head coach job at Maryland, should it come open.

The speculation is rampant that current Maryland coach Fred Willard will be the next head coach at Villanova, so it’s safe to say that the smoke on this is legitimate. It’s also worth noting that Williams’ buyout at Texas A&M is currently $2 million, but drops to $1 million as of Tuesday, April 1.
If Williams is indeed, looking elsewhere, it somewhat makes sense. His 2024-25 A&M squad featured eight seniors, all of whom played prominent roles on the team. From a production standpoint, he’d have to fill a tone of holes to rebuild his roster for next season. And while the basketball team was far too successful for A&M to entertain firing Williams, they may not be completely crushed if he moves on either.
Buzz has had no shortage of postseason success over his coaching career, going to two Sweet 16s and an Elite 8 at Marquette and another Sweet 16 in his final year at Virginia Tech. But he was unable to replicate that March Madness success at A&M, winning just two NCAA Tournament games in three appearances.
