‘Wear Black!’ – Ohio State Announces Crowd Themes for Home Schedule

August 7, 2025 by Last Word On College Football

There are only a few more weeks until the 2025 edition of the Ohio State Buckeyes takes the field against the Texas Longhorns. The last time fans saw the Buckeyes at Ohio Stadium, they helped the Buckeyes dominate Tennessee in what was one of the most electric atmospheres in recent memory. As a result, Athletic Director Ross Bjork has been working to inject a little more energy into the historic stadium.

Earlier this week, we took a shot at guessing which games the Buckeyes will suit up in alternate uniforms. As it turns out, we were a little off the mark. While there is a possibility that a white-out or gray-out look could still be right, Ohio State announced the week for the scarlet-out, the week for a black-out, as well as a new tradition.

Ohio State Announces Crowd Themes for Home Schedule

August 30 vs. Texas: Scarlet the Shoe

For the first game of the year, the Buckeyes will go with the all-scarlet look (presumably) as it hosts another “Scarlet the Shoe” event. In that CFP First Round win over Tennessee, Ohio State rocked the all-scarlet look to success.

While Texas might not buy up tickets to the level that Tennessee did, the burnt orange will not stand out in the crowd as much if it does.

The Buckeyes are unbeaten in the all-scarlet look with wins in 2021 over Penn State and in last year’s CFP win over Tennessee.

September 6 vs. Grambling State: Alumni Band and Cheer

Each year, the Buckeyes host an alumni night to welcome back graduates. One of the best things about it is the quad “Script Ohio.” This year, that event will take place in Week 2 as the Buckeyes suit up against Grambling State for the first time in program history.

September 13 vs. Ohio: Helmet Stripe

In 2021, Penn State broke out a “Helmet Stripe” theme for its fans. For the Nittany Lions, it was 95% a white-out, while the four sections on the 50-yard line would wear navy. It looked cool, but Penn State ended up losing, 21-17, to Michigan.

Ohio State is going to try its own version. Of course, the Buckeyes’ iconic helmet is a little different than Penn State’s. The idea will be that most of the stadium, on the north and south ends, will be decked out in gray/silver, while the sections on the 50-yard line will be scarlet with white sections on either side.

For the only announced night game on the schedule, the Buckeyes are looking to give fans something to look forward to against what is perceived as a lesser opponent. Could this be the game Ohio State breaks out the all-gray look?

October 4 vs. Minnesota: Homecoming

Everyone loves homecoming. This matchup with Minnesota likely won’t be anything special on the field aside from the usual festivities.

November 1 vs. Penn State: Black Out

On October 17, 2015, Ohio State ruffled the feathers of every traditionalist in the fan base when it debuted an all-black look. On that day, it was Penn State on the receiving end of a 38-10 beatdown. This year, assuming the program elects to match the team with the fans, the Buckeyes will wear all-black uniforms on November 1.

The matchup with the Nittany Lions was one of the three games circled on the schedule as the most anticipated. We anticipated the Buckeyes would spice it up, but we expected the all-scarlet look.

It’ll be the fifth time Ohio State plays in the all-black unis. The Buckeyes are unbeaten in the alternate look.

Hopefully, this one isn’t a noon kickoff.

November 15 vs. UCLA: Military Appreciation

There likely won’t be anything different on the field as the Buckeyes take on UCLA unless they unveil something like those “Land of the Wolves” gray unis with the camouflage texture.

November 22 vs. Rutgers: Senior Day

Finally, the day every Buckeye looks forward to: Senior Day. In the final tune-up before heading north to Ann Arbor, Ohio State will honor its graduating seniors and underclassmen who have already made known their plans.
