NORTH AUGUSTA, S.C. — Class of 2026 four-star prospect Cameron Lomax has seen his stock soar this summer due to his play with Drive Nation on the Nike EYBL circuit.
Lomax, the 6-foot point guard out of Faith Family Academy (TX), was previously a standout football player, but he decided to shift his focus to basketball. It’s paid off this summer in a big way, with Lomax seeing his 247Sports ranking climb over 30 spots.
The four-star guard credits his success to shifting his game to being more of a point guard.
“I took a big step showing coaches and people that I can pass and also that I can score,” Lomax told ZAGSBLOG. “And just besides that, being an on-ball defender. That’s probably one of the best assets of my game: defending.”
What else stands out about Lomax’s game?
“I’m good in the passing lanes,” he said. “As far as offense, I can score off the dribble, off the catch-and-shoot. I still have to improve my catch-and-shoot and little bit, but other than that, everything else on the offensive end, I can score any type of way at the point guard position.”
At Peach Jam, Lomax had several incredible games, including a 30 point game with five rebounds and three assists vs. Team CP3. In 17 games with Drive Nation, Lomax averaged 14.3 points, 2.8 rebounds, 2.8 assists and 1.7 steals.
With his rise, several programs are after the point guard’s services. He’s scheduled several official visits: Xavier (Aug. 22), Houston (Sept. 12), Oklahoma State (Sept. 27), SMU (Oct. 4), LSU (Oct. 11), Oklahoma (TBD) and Arizona State (TBD). Those are the schools in the mix right now.
“Depending on how the end of my summer goes depends on any more officials I’ll schedule,” Lomax said. “But other than that, not any [more schools] at the moment.”
Lomax provided his thoughts on all the schools he’s tripping to ZAGSBLOG:
Xavier: “Just how they let their guards rock out and how the development is. I watched them when they were at New Mexico. The coaching staff, I love it. They started recruiting me late, but they saw my potential, believed in me. So that stood out to me and just how they let their guards play.”
Houston: “They love defense and growing up I was always taught defense, defense, defense. And the way they — they take a lot of unranked or underrated players and they develop them to where they can make it to the league. I’m an underrated player myself, and you know just being under that coach, coach [Kelvin] Sampson, I want to be under that.”
Oklahoma St.: “I’ve known coach [Steve] Lutz for a little minute now. They were on me early. He just trusted me and stayed with me. He offered me a couple years back, and I love the way he lets his guards rock out.”
SMU: “They’re a new coaching staff and right in my backyard in Dallas. Just watching them, how they let their little guard rock out and just how good they did, especially it being their first year in the ACC. That stood out to me big time. And also how he lets his guards play and just his coaching style period.”
LSU: “Coach Matt [McMahon], he’s just a very good coach. He lets his guards rock out. He’s a very good coach and he just believes in me.”
Oklahoma: “What they did for Jeremiah Fears, especially him being young and being in my position, that stood out to me big time. And they were on me early too. They offered me and have just kept staying on me, staying on me. So that stood out to me big time as well.”
Arizona State: “Coach Ty Larson, he was on me early too. He was probably one of the first ones to contact me and he was at Texas before. And he just believed in me, and I didn’t have an offer from Texas at the time, but then when he went over to Arizona State, he offered me right when he got there. He was the first one to ever contact me as far as colleges and that just stood out to me big time.”
ZAGSBLOG spotted LSU’s Matt McMahon courtside for Lomax in addition to assistants from Houston, Oklahoma, Oklahoma State, SMU and Xavier in North Augusta. Lomax previously visited Arizona State, Houston LSU, Oklahoma and Oklahoma State unofficially.
Lomax is unsure of a timeline to narrow down his schools or commit.
“I’m going to remain open for a little bit,” Lomax said. “I haven’t had any thought — I haven’t made my decision on when I’m going to start narrowing it down yet. I’m open, you know. However my recruitment goes, I’m okay with pushing it to the spring. It all depends.”
Still, there are some important factors Lomax will consider when it comes to making a college choice.
“Just how consistent the coaches are staying with my recruitment,” Lomax said. “And also I want to go somewhere I can play. So how they’re doing that year and how they’re doing that season will probably determine.”
Lomax is ranked the No. 134 overall prospect in the 2026 class by 247Sports. Off the court, he enjoys going to his local skydiving simulator, and one day, he wants to actually wants to dive from an airplane.
