2021 NFL Free Agency: Houston Texans Sign Lane Taylor

Reunited and it feels so good.

The Texans continue to fill their roster with as many players as possible to breed competition—yes, competition, that vital component to test one’s grit and determination against others and ensure the right/best man wins the job. Today, Houston added former Packers guard Lane Taylor on a one-year contract.

Taylor has already played for new Texans offensive line coach James Campen. In Green Bay, Taylor started 50 games and was the team’s primary starter from 2016 to 2018. The last two seasons, he was pushed to Injured Reserve early in the season; in 2019, it was because of a torn biceps, while in 2020 it was because of a torn ACL.

At 31 years old, Taylor is a possible starter on Houston’s offensive line next season. Most want to pencil Max Scharping as the starter. This shouldn’t be done. Last season Scharping was weak, ineffective, and didn’t know the playbook. With Marcus Cannon expected to move in and start at right guard, Taylor could easily win the starting spot at left guard over Scharping.

Competition is never a bad thing. By reuniting Taylor with his former offensive line coach, he could be more than competition for Scharping if he’s recovered from his ACL tear. Lane Taylor could start for the Texans next season.
