Breaking: Former Cowboy Fourth Rounder Named Trade Candidate – 4 Suitors Emerge

July 14, 2025 by Last Word On Pro Football

After spending the last two seasons with the Houston Texans, tight end Dalton Schultz could be a possible trade candidate this year. According to a report, Schultz might be available for a trade since quarterback CJ Stroud is coming off a slump sophomore campaign despite signing Schultz to a three-year extension in the 2024 offseason. Schultz is one of the high-priced veterans on the roster, among others like Danielle Hunter, Tytus Howard and Joe Mixon. This means the Texans could consider a trade involving the tight end since the team has been able to upgrade Stroud’s aerial attack after signing Justin Watson and drafting a few promising weapons that will likely become starters.

Originally selected in the fourth round of the 2018 NFL Draft, the former Stanford product became one of Stroud’s security blankets in his passing game, but all good things must come to an end. The Texans are hoping it was just a one-season stint that didn’t see Stroud at his best, and if they’re enduring a losing season, which is unlikely, they could send the tight end to garner some draft capital to rebuild their roster. Due to age, contract and the emergence of younger options, Schultz could be available for a trade sooner rather than later, and these four teams could take a chance on him.

Potential Destinations

Kansas City Chiefs

Veteran tight end Travis Kelce is coming back for at least one more season, but the window doesn’t look great as the future Hall of Famer could retire next month. The Kansas City Chiefs have yet to find a proper long-term investment after Kelce, other than signing Robert Tonyan to the starting squad. Noah Gray will have big shoes to fill, so even though Schultz isn’t an ideal candidate to replace Kelce, the Chiefs are better off getting him as a safe veteran option while they continue to find their next long-term tight end.

Dallas Cowboys

Meanwhile, the Dallas Cowboys have the biggest question mark in their tight end department. Jake Ferguson is on the hot seat and will have to prove himself to earn another deal. Between Luke Schoonmaker and John Stephens, neither has yet to prove they can step up if Ferguson doesn’t. The Texans would never trade to Dallas, especially given the history between them and Schultz, but the Cowboys could sign him if he becomes a free agent.

Baltimore Ravens

Even though Mark Andrews will likely return for another season at least, it doesn’t mean the Baltimore Ravens won’t consider a trade. Andrews has been rumored to be heading to another roster, and even if it looks like he will stay, it doesn’t make sense to keep him if they’re investing their future in Isaiah Likely. Just like the Cowboys, the Texans will never send talent to Baltimore, but Schultz could be a capable backup at best behind Likely.

Washington Commanders

Despite signing Zach Ertz for another year since they have “unfinished business,” they must find their next long-term tight end option for quarterback Jayden Daniels. John Bates isn’t your reliable pass-catcher as he’s more of a blocker. Schultz could fill the hole temporarily as he would be another former Cowboy who lands in Washington that might have a successful stint.
