Breaking: Texans Cut Former Super Bowl Champion – 4 Best Fits

September 23, 2025 by Last Word On Pro Football

After the first three games of frustration and drama, the Houston Texans have cut veteran safety CJ Gardner Johnson. According to the breaking news, the Texans are parting ways with Gardner Johnson after spending less than a season in Houston. Originally selected in the fourth round of the 2019 NFL Draft, the former Florida product became one of the bigger contributors in the past success for why the Philadelphia Eagles went to the Super Bowl in February. In a shocking move, the Eagles traded him to the Texans in exchange for offensive lineman Kenyon Green, which didn’t please Gardner Johnson to cap off his one-year tenure in Philadelphia.

Despite that, things haven’t looked bright for the safety as, reportedly, he’s been a solid communicator in the locker room with all of the athletes. With that, head coach DeMeco Ryans admitted that the secondary unit hasn’t been the best, and now, through three games, Gardner Johnson won’t be in a Texan uniform anymore. However, it’s easy to see why the Texans are moving on, as the safety allowed three big plays that contributed to the opposing offense scoring touchdowns. There was friction that came with it as Gardner-Johnson wanted to blitz more in certain situations, and now, with the team 0-3, it was better for the Texans to release him since he had requested a trade out of Houston.

Potential Destinations

Dallas Cowboys

The Dallas Cowboys probably have one of the worst secondary units for this season, specifically. They haven’t been able to stop the pass, and that was visible in the grueling loss against the Chicago Bears. With Trevon Diggs struggling and DaRon Bland still nursing an injury, Jerry Jones should find a way to fix this pass secondary. The Dallas defense is pretty much soul-searching since they lost Micah Parsons, and now that Kenny Clark, who they got in the trade, is injured. Everything is going badly for the Cowboys, and if they can sign Gardner-Johnson, they should.

The safety has the attitude that Dallas should be looking for, and he would be a reliable upgrade over Donovan Wilson and Malik Hooker.

New Orleans Saints

Meanwhile, the New Orleans Saints aren’t in the market for a safety, but it wouldn’t hurt to add another one. With the Saints having one of the worst cornerback rooms in the league between Kool-Aid McKinstry and Alontae Taylor, they must do something to revive this team. The Saints are 0-3, too, like the Texans, but Gardner-Johnson’s leadership is something the Saints should bite.

Philadelphia Eagles

Nobody should rule out the idea of the Eagles signing him to run it back for another Super Bowl run. With Sydney Brown still battling injuries again this season, they must get someone to help the rookie Andrew Mukuba. While they have Reed Blankenship for that situation, why not get Gardner-Johnson under a one-year contract to complete the four-way package?

Carolina Panthers

However, the Carolina Panthers are coming off a statement win over the Falcons. They were able to stop Michael Penix Jr., but the biggest thing for this secondary is if they can stay consistent. Between Jaycee Horn, Mike Jackson and new free agent-signee, Tre’Von Moehrig, they’ve been able to shore up the secondary. Gardner-Johnson should be like icing on the cake.
