The Houston Texans have officially fired head coach David Culley. The news was first reported by Tom Pelissero of the NFL Network. A surprising decision to many as Culley was with the organization for only one season. Head coaches rarely ever get fired after their first year. As of this writing, the details of the firing have yet to be made public.

David Culley Fired After One Season
While Houston did not have a “positive” season by any stretch, it was not a complete disaster. No one was expecting Houston to make any noise in the NFL this season. Sadly, Culley was set up for a lose-lose scenario in his first season. With that in mind, Houston was still able to get a few impressive wins. Specifically, a 41-29 thrashing of the Los Angeles Chargers. Los Angeles had a lot of players out due to COVID-19, but they still should not have been dominated the way they were. Even with a lack of talent on the roster, Culley’s team was always prepared to play on Sundays.

For the season, Houston finished third in the AFC South with a 4-13 record. The team was able to beat the Jacksonville Jaguars twice, but that is not saying much these days. Impressive wins over the Tennessee Titans and the Chargers were unfortunately not enough to save Culley’s job. Rookie quarterback Davis Mills was the team’s starter for the majority of their games this season.
It definitely feels like Culley is not getting a fair shake here. The depth of talent is just not there on the roster this season. That falls on general manager Nick Caserio though. There is an argument to be made that the talent on this roster is not even as good as Jacksonville’s. This is just more context as to why this firing does not seem right. Regardless, Houston will once again be looking for another head coach.
