For the first time this training camp, the Houston Texans put their pads on. While that should be the main takeaway from Tuesday’s practice, the absence of Deshaun Watson has really dominated the headlines.
Watson hasn’t been receiving snaps under center so far in camp. Last week, he was seen playing safety in what was being called a “scout team type of deal.”
When asked if the team would change its approach for the first padded practice, Texans head coach David Culley said “Nothing has changed.” Well, it certainly seems like something has changed over the past 24 hours.
It’s one thing for Watson to miss practice because of an injury or a coach’s decision, but it’s another for him to have an absence with no definitive reason for it.
Culley was asked about Watson’s absence from practice on Tuesday. His response was pretty vague though.
“We make decisions every day based on what’s best for our football team,” Culley told reporters.

Didn’t elaborate further on the matter. “Nothing new today on that.”

The Texans may keep Deshaun Watson off the field until his legal situation is resolved. It’s also possible they’re trying to trade him and want to prevent any serious injury from happening. Texans beat reporter Aaron Wilson noted that he had his ankle examined on Monday.

For now, Watson’s playing career is up in the air. He’s facing several lawsuits and may not see the field in any capacity this fall.
