Derek Stingley Reveals Who Was Tougher To Guard: Ja’Marr Chase Or Justin Jefferson

Derek Stingley celebrates an interception.

During his freshman season with the LSU Tigers in 2019, Derek Stingley Jr. had the difficult task of squaring off against both Justin Jefferson and Ja’Marr Chase in practice.

In a recent Q&A with our Hunter Hodies, Stingley revealed which of these star NFL receivers was tougher to match up with.

“Ja’Marr was tougher to guard just because he was stronger but Justin was still really good. He was right there with him,” Stingley said.

As the No. 3 overall pick to the Houston Texans in last night’s draft, Stingley will look to get off to a hot start just like his former LSU teammates.

Since he was selected with the No. 22 pick in the 2020 draft, Jefferson has logged 3,016 yards, 17 touchdowns and two Pro-Bowl selections as a member of the Minnesota Vikings. In his rookie season as the No. 5 overall pick in Cincinnati, Chase put together an offensive rookie of the year performance with 1,455 yards and 13 touchdowns en route to a Super Bowl appearance.

Stingley’s best collegiate season came when both Jefferson and Chase were on the Tigers’ roster. On the way to an undefeated National Championship title in 2019, the talented young CB notched 38 tackles, six interceptions and 15 passes defended.

The Texans will not face off against either of Stingley’s former wide receiver teammates in 2022.
