The Houston Texans have their new head coach, and ESPN’s Dan Orlovsky has a quarterback in mind for them as well.
After colleague Adam Schefter reported that the Texans had hired San Francisco 49ers defensive coordinator DeMeco Ryans as head coach, he took to Twitter to outline his thoughts on what Ryans should do on the offensive side of the ball.
“Needs to bring OC with ’em and hit on the QB,” Orlovsky said. “Meco played in Hou under [Gary Kubiak], and than has been in SF with Kyle. Whoever he brings as an OC is sure as heck going to come from those routes and the QB that comes to mind first: Anthony Richardson. See how it plays out.”
Richardson, who declares for the NFL Draft after his redshirt sophomore season at the University of Florida, is viewed as a boom-or-bust prospect. If he can refine the immense physical tools he has, the 6-foot-4, 232-pound Richardson could be a star.
However, his floor is lower than some of the other quarterbacks in this year’s class. If the Texans do wind up coveting Richardson, it’s unlikely they will use their No. 2 overall pick on him.
They could trade down and try to land Richardson, or take the best player available at No. 2 and then either attempt to select Richardson with the 12th overall pick or trade up a few spots to get him.
There’s a lot of time between now and late April though.
