DeMeco Ryans won’t be starting off his vacation until after he fills a vacancy.
The Houston Texans fired offensive coordinator Bobby Slowik after two years with the AFC South franchise on Friday. Houston also fired offensive line coach Chris Strausser, as well as assistant offensive line coach Cole Popovich.
Despite winning back-to-back division titles, the offense struggled throughout the year. Last season, Slowik was considered a rising star and the next big-time head coaching candidate.
After regression set in behind an underwhelming season with a reported “five-headed monster” on offense, Slowik will fire up the resume and look for a place to call plays in 2025.
C.J. Stroud’s regression factored into the decision to move off Slowik. A year after winning Offensive Rookie of the Year, Stroud finished 15th in passing yards (3,727) and tied for 15th in passing touchdowns (20) after having 4,108 yards (eighth in the NFL) with 23 touchdowns (13th) in Year 1 in two fewer games. He also was sacked 54 times, second-most among QBs and third-most by any team.
“Overall, offensively, it wasn’t where we wanted to be,” Ryans said Monday. “There were challenges throughout the year, that is every year. You have challenges, you have ups and downs where you try to figure out the course, who we have and how to make it work. We have to improve.”
Fans seemed pleased that Slowik no longer is running the show. Here’s some of the top comments following Slowik’s firing.
