Should the Texans pursue former Commanders defensive tackle Jonathan Allen?
The Houston Texans defense was great in 2024, but there are still a few positions that need to be addressed, and one of them is defensive tackle.
General Manager Nick Caserio had a clear plan last offseason, and that was to sign several mid-tier defensive tackles, instead of one high-tier. Caserio’s plan actually worked out well, considering their limited investments in Tim Settle, Foley Fatukasi and Mario Edwards Jr. Settle will be in Houston for another year, while Fatukasi and Edwards are headed for free agency.
This offseason, things could be different. The Washington Commanders have released Pro Bowl defensive tackle Jonathan Allen, and it would not be a surprise if the Texans were to show significant interest.
Allen could be a great fit in Head Coach DeMeco Ryans’ defense, and it is likely that he would prefer to play for a playoff team, after not much success throughout his tenure in Washington.
Houston does not have a lot of cap space to work with at the moment, but the good news is that they can create a significant amount of room rather quickly. Caserio already adjusted the contracts of wide receiver Nico Collins, along with linebacker Azeez Al-Shaair and he is likely not done.
The Texans also have interest in former Texans defensive tackle Sheldon Rankins, who was just released by the Cincinnati Bengals.
