J.J. Watt is thrilled for his former teammate DeMeco Ryans.
After Ryans was announced as the next head coach of the Houston Texans on Tuesday, Watt took to Twitter to congratulate the former 49ers defensive coordinator.
“LET’S GOOOOOOO!!!!!! You want to reenergize and reignite the incredible Houston fan base, this is a hell of a start!! Cannot wait to see what Meco does. One of the best teammates & leaders I’ve ever been around. #HTown,” Watt wrote on Twitter.
Watt and Ryans had just one season of overlap as teammates in Houston. Ryans was in his sixth season as a linebacker for the Texans when the team selected Watt with the 11th pick in the 2011 draft.
Ryans passed the torch to Watt, who went on to notch three Defensive Player of the Year awards as leader of the Texans’ defense.
Watt left the Texans organization to join the Arizona Cardinals in 2021, but still clearly has a lot of interest in his former team.
Watt, who’s heading into his first year of retirement, will no doubt be rooting for Ryans and the Texans in 2023.
