Texans coach David Culley seeks balance with Tim Kelly as offensive coordinator

June 3, 2021 by Texans Wire Leave a Comment

Houston Texans coach David Culley is taking over as the fourth full-time coach in franchise history.

Although the 65-year-old has largely brought in his own staff, there are still some holdovers from the Bill O’Brien regime, and the biggest one is offensive coordinator Tim Kelly.

Culley comes from the Andy Reid school of the West Offense while Kelly’s entry into the NFL was with O’Brien when he took the Texans’ coaching job in 2014. The Texans’ offense is run by a coordinator with spread concepts yet coached by someone from a West Coast background.

Overall, Culley hopes the Texans are able to achieve balance with the interesting union of offensive philosophy.

“Obviously, this was a football team last year offensively that threw the ball very well,” Culley told reporters on a Zoom call Thursday after organized team activities. “Basically we wanted to be able to, this year, kind of balance that out a little bit.”

The Texans produced 4,538 passing yards, the fourth-most in the NFL in 2020. However, the run game left a lot of room for improvement with just 1,466 yards rushing, the second-fewest in the league. Even the Texans’ yards per carry at 4.3 was tied for 14th-lowest in the NFL.

Culley has also brought in assistants at other stops, including quarterbacks coach and passing game coordinator Pep Hamilton, to help with the new blend on offense.

Said Culley: “Basically, we’ve brought in some guys on this staff that have been a part of franchises that have had that balance. These coaches have been through everything that you could possibly go through in this league as far as what people do offensively. I think the ideals that they’ve brought in to help Tim and this offensive staff and getting new ideas have really gelled very well.”

Without three-time Pro Bowl quarterback Deshaun Watson under center, the Texans are forced to come up with a new offense that can find unique ways to protect the football and generate points.
