The Houston Texans addressed a need with the selection of former Baylor Bears safety Jalen Pitre in Round 2 of the 2022 NFL draft.

The Texans used their No. 3 overall pick in Round 1 to take a dynamic cornerback in LSU’s Derek Stingley who can develop into the best cornerback in the game a few seasons from now. To shore up the backend in coach Lovie Smith’s Tampa 2 defense, Houston went with Pitre, who gives them a safety with the potential of Justin Reid and then some.

According to Doug Farrar from the Touchdown Wire, the Texans’ pick of Pitre was one of the best moves of the second round on Friday night.

Pitre was one of My Guys in this draft class, and the more I watched him, the more I liked him as the perfect embodiment of the modern safety/slot/box/blitz defensive back. The Texans will be able to deploy him everywhere from the line of scrimmage to the slot to the deep third, where he can take away vertical concepts all day long. Watch No. 8 click and close to the ball, and know that Lovie Smith’s defense just got better.

The Texans get a safety who can help complete the defense, and were able to pull it off and get decent value. Day 2 has been general manager Nick Caserio’s time to shine.
