Free-agent cornerback Steven Nelson met with the Houston Texans on Monday, via Michael David Smith of Pro Football Talk.
The 29-year-old is seeking a new home after starting 16 games for the Philadelphia Eagles last season. He recorded 50 tackles, one interception, and seven passes defended in his seventh NFL season.
Despite remaining a stalwart in Philadelphia’s starting lineup, Nelson struggled in coverage last season. According to Pro Football Reference, opponents registered a 108.4 quarterback rating when throwing against the 5-foot-10, 194-pound defender, completing 48 of 72 targets for 577 yards and five touchdowns.
Nelson started his career by playing four seasons with the Kansas City Chiefs, who selected him in the third round of the 2015 draft. He then went to the Pittsburgh Steelers, where he started 15 games in back-to-back seasons.
Houston ranked 23rd in passing defense last season, surrendering 8.0 yards per attempt. The Texans haven’t added much to their secondary this offseason beyond signing former Green Bay Packers back-up Isaac Yiadom.
Nelson doesn’t seem to be attracting a bidding war, but he could provide veteran depth to a Texans squad that went 4-13 last season.
