Watch: Lovie Smith Meets With The Media

Houston’s new defensive coordinator discusses the team before the 2021 NFL Draft.

The Houston Texans are an entirely different team than the one that finished 4-12 in January. They may not be better or much worse, but they are entirely different. From the coaching staff to the roster, the Texans have been rebuilt in the image of the FCA, Jack Easterby, and Nick Caserio.

One of the major changes was hiring Lovie Smith to be their defensive coordinator. Smith was the previous head coach of the Chicago Bears; you know, the one what went to a Super Bowl with Rex Grossman at quarterback. Upon his dismissal in Chicago, Smith became the head coach in Tampa Bay, where he went 8-24 in two seasons. After that, he ran away to the University of Illinois. He lasted five seasons there, going 17-39 and 10-33 in conference play.

Taking a demotion to DC, Lovie can how focus entirely on the defense. His 4-3 Tampa 2 scheme will be called antiquated, hilarious, ridiculous by the haters and losers; it’s a scheme that’s entirely different than the multiple fronts, high blitz rate, and Cover 4 that Romeo Crennel deployed when he held the same position in Houston.

This afternoon, Lovie Smith met with the media to discuss the 2021 Houston Texans entering the 2021 NFL Draft. You can watch the full conference here, and below.

Rivers McCown has the highlights, if you only care about Lovie’s thoughts on turnovers, the scheme transition to the NFL, and the roster turnover.

Lovie Smith on turnovers: “I know people say, well, turnovers just come. I don’t believe that. I think … when you come and watch us practice, you’re gonna see an emphasis placed on that daily … we’ve been able to get that accomplished just about everywhere we’ve been.” pic.twitter.com/05H3oC0QzF

Lovie on D transition to NFL: “Probably more adjustments we had to make (in college) … lot more run, quarterback-run-dominated offenses … in college we weren’t able to run our entire system … we kept our base defense on the field, we didn’t play our nickel package as much.” pic.twitter.com/oiM2OhYgwy

Lovie on turnover: “What we all got together to do was to start overhauling the roster to get our personnel to fit it. I feel like we’re close to that right now. I love all the free agency moves that we’ve made … we like our roster that we have right now before … the draft.” pic.twitter.com/lRvKdB9uPa

We wish Lovie the best of luck here at BRB. We hope he is the one who knows the code to fully unlock Kamu Gruiger-Hill’s potential.
