Who is the Texans top cut candidate for the offseason?

January 29, 2025 by Texans Wire

Who is the Houston Texans’ top cut candidate for the 2025 offseason?

According to most, there’s one name that stands above the rest.

While expected to be a focal point of Houston’s run defense, veteran defensive lineman Denico Autry struggled to duplicate his success initially found with the Tennessee Titans.

Pro Football Network recently released its top option to cut for all 32 rosters. To no one’s surprise, Autry was the representative for the AFC South champions.

“Autry played just 25% of the snaps for the team in 2024 and finished with three sacks and nine pressures,” PFN wrote. “Those are not great numbers for someone costing nearly $11 million against the cap. Therefore, saving just under $6 million by cutting him might allow them to use that money for a better cost-to-production ratio than they are getting from Autry.”

Currently, Houston has under $10 million in cap space with multiple holes that must be filled. The Texans could cut other names, including offensive linemen Tytus Howard and Shaq Mason, but both could also be retained on reworked contracts.

Autry, who was suspended for six games after testing positive for PEDs this offseason, started on the wrong foot for Houston. He might just need a fresh start on the open market entering 2025.
