The Houston Texans won’t have a three-time Pro Bowler under center in 2021. So, now what?
It means the Texans will have to retool their offense and get other skill positions involved.
According to new Texans tight ends coach Andy Bischoff, via Aaron Wilson of Sports Talk 790, it appears that some of the discussions among the offensive coaching staff inside NRG Stadium include getting the tight ends more involved, similar to the Baltimore Ravens’ offense. Allegedly offensive coordinator Tim Kelly is open to having the tight ends play a more versatile role in the offense.
Kelly was also complimentary of fourth-year tight end Jordan Akins during media availability on Tuesday.
“As far as Jordan Akins’ ability after the catch, that’s one of the biggest things he does,” Kelly said. “He’s able to break tackles, turn a three-yard checkdown into a 16-yard chunk play.”
Akins caught 37 passes for 403 yards and a touchdown for the Texans in 2020. The production was similar to Akins’ second season in 2019 except the former 2018 third-round pick from Central Florida played in three fewer games.
Another third-round tight end the offensive coaches are taking a look at closely is Kahale Warring. The former San Diego State product has “oodles of talent,” according to Bischoff, but has a paucity of production with just three catches for 35 yards through seven career games over two seasons.
The Texans also bolstered their tight end group by drafting former Miami tight end Brevin Jordan in the fifth round last April. Houston also has Pharaoh Brown, Ryan Izzo, Antony Auclair, and Paul Quessenberry on the roster.
