Dwight Howard on playing with James Harden in Houston: ‘I felt he was a younger Kobe Bryant with better passing’

January 31, 2025 by Hoops Hype

Dwight Howard: When I was in Houston, Daryl Morey made it his job to make sure that I got out of Houston. When I first got there, there were a lot of post-ups, and James really didn’t like that type of lineup. So it became a one-on-one ISO with James, and the rest of us just watching. We’d come set screens or space the floor, but that was it. It didn’t work after that.” “I thought me and James were gonna work because I felt like he was a younger Kobe with better passing—especially for pick-and-roll. So I’m looking at it like, ‘If I can play with somebody who’s up-and-coming, who can score, who throws great lobs and is a pocket passer, that’s perfect for me.’ Because I’m a dynamic roller, you know? I don’t have to do too much work. Playing with somebody who can score easy buckets—I can get him easy buckets coming off screens, and he can get me easy buckets with lobs and stuff like that. I’m like, ‘Man, this is a perfect match for me. They got shooters.’

No LaMelo Ball. James Harden is in. No Kings, no Mavericks. There were some interesting decisions by the coaches, to put it kindly.

In light of the 5-year commemoration of Kobe Bryant’s death, a ton of inaccuracies regarding the ‘96 draft has appeared on line. Prayerfully, a NY Post column I wrote following an interview I did with Kobe when he was 33 will end the fabrication & speculation… – 8:40 AM

More on this storyline

Dwight Howard: Man, that was tough to deal with. When you got a player that you watched growing up—I literally watched Kobe growing up—even though we played together and had all these disagreements, or whatever people want to say, right? It’s still somebody that I looked at like, ‘Damn, this is Kobe Bryant, man. I want to be like that one day, being on that stage.’ And now we’re teammates, and it’s like, ‘Damn, this dude is on mute with me. What’s going on?’ -via YouTube / January 31, 2025
Dwight Howard: But I did like playing with James for those first couple of years. Then, after that, I was like, ‘Dang, this dude don’t pass me the ball no more! What did I do to you?’” -via YouTube / January 31, 2025
Dwight Howard on Kobe Bryant: Man, we flew together (from Dallas All-Star Weekend). We were on the same plane, and we didn’t even talk. I’m like, ‘Yo, my guy, it’s just me and you. We can’t even speak to each other?’ I’m like, ‘Nah, this ain’t right.’ It felt like a movie. It ain’t right. I’m saying, Kobe—this ain’t right. What’s going on? For real, like—he knew we were teammates. Then when we got to the lockers, me and him were supposed to be next to each other because they put all the teammates together. But he’s over here, and I’m like, ‘Yo, this is crazy.’ I didn’t know what was going on. I didn’t know what was going on. -via YouTube / January 31, 2025
Shams Charania: 2025 NBA West All-Star reserves: Anthony Edwards, Anthony Davis, James Harden, Jaren Jackson Jr., Alperen Sengun, Jalen Williams, Victor Wembanyama. -via x.com / January 30, 2025
Jorge Sierra: James Harden has passed Rod Strickland in assists and is No. 13 all-time now. Yes, he’s higher in assists than in scoring. Also: Stephen Curry moved ahead of Ray Allen for No. 27 in NBA history. Nikola Jokic passed Shawn Kemp for No. 150. -via x.com / January 30, 2025
