Houston is still opposed to breaking up its core to acquire Kevin Durant

February 5, 2025 by Hoops Hype

Marc Stein: Amid a growing belief leaguewide that Kevin Durant actually could be traded this week, sources say nothing has changed in Houston regarding its posture on a major in-season change. The Rockets, as covered by @TheSteinLine repeatedly this season, want to give their young team a playoff shot. There have been no signals yet to suggest a possible audible at this deadline. The Kevin Durant trade whispers have reached a dull roar, and it feels like a deal with the Warriors that involves Jimmy Butler may be imminent. But why would the Suns do that, and what would that type of trade look like? I gave my thoughts: bit.ly/4gwU6k6 – 2:19 AM

Folks, I am trying to make the money work on a Durant-to-Dallas trade, and let me tell you, this is probably the single greatest cap puzzle I have ever attempted.
As it stands right now, I have Dallas sending out six players. Sorry Anthony Davis, you’re a center again. – 6:58 PM

Suns injury report has Kevin Durant doubtful with left ankle sprain for tomorrow’s game vs. Thunder to end 4-game road trip.

Suns have listed Kevin Durant as doubtful for tomorrow nights game in OKC. As @SInow reported yesterday, there’s an increasing belief among rival execs that if Phoenix can’t land Jimmy Butler, the Suns will engage on a Durant deal. Phoenix working two fronts right now. – 6:42 PM
Sam Quinn @SamQuinnCBS
So you know how there was major debate back in 2021 about whether or not James Harden was the sort of superstar you’d want around Kevin Durant and Kyrie Irving?
There’d be no debate with Anthony Davis. All Luka BS aside, that team would be incredible. – 6:42 PM

The Luka-isn’t-in-shape stuff is kind of funny, considering last year he was the first player in a decade to have a season with 3,500 minutes and 3,000 points. (Durant did it in 2013-14. LeBron missed it by one point in 2017-18.) – 12:46 PM

More on this storyline

Yet league sources say that the Suns have not limited their Durant discussions this week to Golden State, showing a greater willingness to discuss trade scenarios involving the NBA’s No. 9 all-time leading scorer than they ever have before. -via marcstein.substack.com / February 5, 2025
One reason for the significant uptick in Durant chatter, sources said, is that trading him appears to be the only way for Phoenix to acquire Miami’s Jimmy Butler before Thursday’s deadline. -via marcstein.substack.com / February 5, 2025
Why would the Suns want Butler if they no longer have Durant on the roster? No one asked by The Stein Line has been able to furnish a good answer to that question, but rumbles persist that a scenario that transports Butler from South Beach to the desert — with Durant moving back to the Bay Area — is indeed in play. -via marcstein.substack.com / February 5, 2025
