NBA Players Elect Ex-NBA Champion As New Union President

The NBA Players Association is officially under new leadership.

Over the weekend, ESPN NBA insider Shams Charania reported that the NBPA has elected a new president to lead its union and oversee the latest collective bargaining agreement that runs through the 2029-30 season.

Per the ESPN insider, veteran Rockets guard Fred VanVleet will head the Players Association and succeed CJ McCollum who previously served in that role.

McCollum will instead transition to more of an advisory role as VanVleet takes over the bulk of presidential responsibilities.

The 33-year-old combo guard was president of the NBPA for the past four years and also held the title of executive vice president prior to that — leading the league’s CBA negotiations in the most recent deal that passed in 2023.

VanVleet is extremely respected around the league after turning himself into an NBA champion and All-Star as an undersized and undrafted floor general out of Wichita State.

And he’s also set multiple records for biggest contract signed by a player who didn’t hear their name called on draft night.

After helping change the culture in Houston and playing a pivotal role in the franchise’s 50-32 turnaround this past season, VanVleet signed a two-year $50 million deal to remain with the Rockets — who also added Kevin Durant to the fold this summer.
