Upcoming Netflix Documentary Traces Kevin Durant’s Journey

October 24, 2025 by Last Word On Pro Basketball

The Kevin Durant Netflix documentary is officially underway, giving fans an intimate look into one of basketball’s most fascinating careers. As the 2025–26 NBA season tips off, Netflix is teaming up with OBB Pictures and Boardroom to deliver the definitive portrait of the Houston Rockets star: a player whose impact on and off the court continues to shape the game.

The currently-untitled series will explore Durant’s rise from his early days in the Washington, D.C., and Maryland area, through his single standout season at the University of Texas, to becoming one of the most prolific scorers in NBA history. The project also highlights his time representing the United States at the Olympics, where he became the most decorated men’s basketball player ever.

Upcoming Netflix Documentary Traces Kevin Durant’s Journey

Filming began before the 2023–24 NBA season, ahead of Durant’s record-breaking run at the 2024 Paris Olympics, featured in Netflix’s “Court of Gold.” Production will continue throughout the current season (Durant’s first in Houston) as the veteran forward enters the twilight of his Hall of Fame career.

The series is directed by Emmy Award winners Michael D. Ratner (Justin Bieber: Our World; Dancing With the Devil) and Robert Alexander (A Man Named Scott; SNL50: Beyond Saturday Night), two filmmakers known for crafting intimate, human-centered stories around global icons.

“It’s incredibly exciting to partner with one of the greatest to ever practice their craft,” Ratner said. “Kevin is undeniably one of the best to ever play basketball, but he’s also a fascinating individual with an untold story that will inspire and excite everyone who watches.”

Alongside Ratner, executive producers include Scott Ratner, Kfir Goldberg, Camille Maratchi, Robert Alexander, Rich Kleiman, and Sarah Flynn. Kleiman, Durant’s long-time manager and co-founder of Boardroom, brings an insider’s perspective to the storytelling, ensuring authenticity throughout the project.

A Career Worth the Spotlight

Durant’s story is tailor-made for documentary treatment. Now in his 18th NBA season, he has won two NBA championships, earned two Finals MVPs, and captured one league MVP award. He’s also a 15-time All-Star, a four-time Olympic gold medalist, and the all-time leading scorer in U.S. Olympic basketball history.

Earlier this month, Durant made headlines once again by signing a two-year, $90 million extension with Houston, officially becoming the highest-earning player in NBA history with over $598 million in career salary. It’s yet another chapter in a career defined by both brilliance and resilience; from his early years in Seattle with the SuperSonics, through his MVP peak in Oklahoma City, and his championship glory with Golden State, to his new leadership role in Houston.

The Netflix series promises unprecedented access, including candid interviews with Durant’s family, coaches, and teammates spanning his entire career. Expect to see reflections from key figures who witnessed his transformation from a quiet prodigy into one of the most respected voices in modern basketball.

A Broader Look at Basketball Through Durant’s Lens

The documentary will also connect with Netflix’s growing lineup of basketball storytelling. Durant’s journey appears in the second season of “Starting 5,” which chronicled the 2024–25 NBA season alongside stars like Jaylen Brown, Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, Tyrese Haliburton, and James Harden.

In “Starting 5,” Durant reached another milestone, surpassing 30,000 career points, and becoming just the eighth player in league history to do so. Now, as production continues, cameras will capture the evolution of a veteran still adding chapters to his legacy in real time.

For Durant, whose career has spanned three decades, five franchises, and countless reinventions, this new series is more than a biography. It’s a chronicle of perseverance, artistry, and the relentless pursuit of greatness.
