Superman to Scotland?

Is Christian Ramirez heading to Scotland? Here’s what we know.

Seemingly on the outside looking in of late in Houston, Dynamo forward Christian Ramirez could be moving overseas to attempt to reenergize his career. Multiple reports in recent days have linked Ramirez with Scottish Premiership side Aberdeen FC.

The 30 year old has played just 91 minutes for the Dynamo this season, scoring once. With a number of attackers seemingly ahead of Ramirez on the depth chart, it would make sense for him to look at other options in his career. But, why Scotland? Enter Aberdeen FC manager Stephen Glass. Before becoming manager of the Scottish side, Glass was manager of Atlanta United 2 and interim manager of Atlanta United. According to sources I have spoken with, it was Glass and Atlanta who attempted to trade for Ramirez last season after star Josef Martinez went down with a torn ACL. Now, Glass is after his man again.

Aberdeen assistant Allan Russell also has ties to Ramirez. Prior to relocating his business, Superior Striker, to Britain, Russell counted Ramirez as one of his clients. In an interview in 2019, Russell discussed working with Christian in the past. “In 2013/14, it began to grow and the programme was getting a good reaction. Players that I worked with three years ago, five years ago, have gone on to have good careers, such as Christian Ramirez, who just scored for the US last week. He was playing in the lower leagues in America.”

According to the Press and Journal, Ramirez would be keen to take a pay cut from his one million dollar a year salary in order to join Aberdeen. Ramirez would also need to obtain a work permit to play in Scotland, and while his two caps for the United States in 2019 won’t help his cause, Aberdeen are ready to make their case.

If the Dynamo and Major League Soccer are able to get a deal done and move Ramirez, Houston could be in the market for another attacker. On the other hand, with the number of attackers they currently have, the club could perhaps look to strengthen the midfield or defense, possibly with the rumored addition of Teenage Hadebe.

We will see if a deal gets done to send Superman to Scotland. What are your thoughts, let us know in the comments below.
