The Houston Texans didn’t need to win the draft to be considered offseason winners. Most of the heavy lifting heading into 2024 came during free agency.
Smart franchises are always trying to stay one step ahead of other contenders. That might explain the selection of Notre Dame offensive tackle Blake Fisher during the second round at pick No. 59. While today he’ll be viewed as a swing tackle, the former Fighting Irish lineman might be considered the long-term replacement for Tytus Howard or Laremy Tunsil.
Houston’s offensive line has seen its share of injuries over the past three seasons. Howard, who inked a three-year extension prior to the start of training camp, missed 10 games in 2023 and ended the season on the injured reserved. Tunsil, one of the league’s top left tackles, missed three games and will turn 30 this offseason.
Fisher, who started 27 games at tackle over three seasons in South Bend, who be asked to start Week 1, but the Texans believe he offers value given the value of the position. He’s expected to remain at tackle and could even push for first-team reps before the season’s end with a promising training camp.
Here is what several NFL draft experts had to say about Fisher before he was selected by the Texans on Friday night.
